Basalt corner notched and stemmed projectile points recovered near a Siegfried
Canyon basalt quarry site in the northern Sierra Nevada Mountains of California.
The artifact on the left originated from the local Siegfried Canyon Ridge source
while the specimen on the right was correlated with the Gold Lake source. Both
artifacts are approximately 2 cm long.

Basalt XRF Characterization Studies at Northwest Research

We are currently engaged in an active program of basalt source identification and trace element characterization in the Tahoe National Forest region of California and have recently widened our source net to include selected sources in Oregon, Nevada, California, Arizona, and Hawaii.
