SADDLE ROAD, BIG ISLAND, HAWAII

A view from the Saddle Road that runs across Hawaii's Big Island between Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea volcanoes and links Hiko and Waimea. The road was originally built in 1942 as an access road for the Pohakolua Army Base and now also provides a route to the Mauna Kea Science Reserve International Astronomical Complex located in the summit area of Mauna Kea (elevation 13,796 feet ASL). The flows of basalt in the panorama date to 1935.
