PAISLEY CAVES, SUMMER LAKE BASIN, SOUTHCENTRAL OREGON
The Paisley Five Mile Point Caves, located near the eastern end of Summer Lake, were originally excavated in the 1930's by Luther Cressman of the University of Oregon. After a hiatus of many decades, research by the University of Oregon began again at the caves in 2002 and continues to the present day. Radiocarbon and DNA analysis of coprolites recovered from undisturbed deposits yielded an age of over 14,000 years, and provide what appears to be the earliest evidence of human occupation in North America.
