SPRING 2010 NEWSLETTER: NEWS AND GREETINGS FROM NORTHWEST RESEARCH

Above: A closeup look at obsidian on top of the Obsidian Cliffs flow in the central High Cascades of Oregon. Glass from this source was intensively used throughout the Holocene and made its way as far north as British Columbia, Canada.

2010 ANNUAL LAB GRANT: The deadline (May 31, 2010) for the annual $1000 lab grant is rapidly approaching. If you are a graduate student (or are looking for support for your grad students) and your research involves an Oregon, Washington, northern Nevada, or Idaho obsidian-related research problem, we may have some lab support for you. Click HERE to find out how to apply.

2010 FIELD SEASON APPROACHES: After spending the winter patiently analyzing artifacts at the lab, we're sorting through the camping gear now and are looking forward to heading back out for another season of fieldwork. Click HERE to see what we're planning and what we were up to last year.

EXPANDED FREE DOWNLOADS: We've been gradually adding more downloadable dissertations and theses at the downloads section of the website. Got an obsidian-related one that you'd like to add to the pile? Let us know and we'll get it posted for you.

ADDITIONAL OBSIDIAN SOURCE MAPS: We're continuing to produce obsidian and (soon) FGV (fine-grained volcanic toolstone and basalt) source maps for the western United States, Hawaii, and Canada. Click HERE to see how we're doing. We also take suggestions - if there's a map that you would particularly like us to add to the list, let us know and we'll put it on the wish list.

FACEBOOK AND YOUTUBE: We've yielded to Web 2.0 temptations and have provided some mercifully brief content for YouTube and also added a modest lab presence on Facebook.

OBSIDIAN SOURCE CATALOG: As time permits, we continue to tinker with the U.S. Obsidian Source Catalog and have recently begun to fill out the state obsidian source lists with brief descriptions (beginning with Utah).

AND YES, THE HYDRATION LAB IS DEFINITELY OPEN: I know we've mentioned this before but there is still a little lingering confusion about the obsidian hydration lab. In case you missed it, we reopened the obsidian hydration laboratory in April of 2009 and plan to keep it that way. Click HERE for the details.

That's it for now - we'll be back in the winter with an update in another six months or so. In the meantime, we invite you to take a look around the lab websites (www.obsidianlab.com and www.sourcecatalog.com) to see what we're up to and to see what kind of provenance-related resources are available for your use.
