FROGS IN PARADISE

FROGS IN PARADISE?

Sand Springs, one of several perennial ponds found in the 1,350 year-old pumice deposits that originated from eruptions in the nearby caldera of Oregon's Newberry Volcano. Right: The pond is a magnet for local wildlife and supports a thriving population of tadpoles and frogs. The springs were also an important prehistoric source of water - obsidian flakes are common in the area surrounding the pools and trace element provenance studies of the artifacts indicate that they originated from the local Quartz Mountain obsidian source. The frogs of Sand Springs serve to illustrate the critical role of point resources and microenvironments in understanding the human prehistory and biotic diversity of the arid Great Basin of the western United States.
